October 18, 2016
Queens, NY – Yesterday, Senator Avella met with Vilma Salmeron, a recipient of the New York Association for Continuing/Community Education’s Student of the Year award.
Vilma came to the United States from El Salvador in 1999 in an effort to leave an abusive relationship back home and make a better life for her and her daughters. Her nominator from the Great Neck Adult Learning Center praised Ms. Salmeron by saying, “Despite the challenges of balancing family, work, and other responsibilities with going back to school, Ms. Salmeron has always remained focused and determined.”
Vilma is currently working as a nurse’s assistant and dreams of opening her own diagnostics center one day.
