Senator Tony Avella’s Statement on MTA’s Proposed Fare Hike
November 17, 2016
Queens, NY—State Senator Tony Avella had the following to say when he heard that the MTA was looking at proposals to raise their fares again.
“As if living in New York wasn’t difficult enough, the new proposals being considered by the MTA that would raise the transportation costs of New Yorkers by 4% is absolutely incredible. This is, once again, another example of a corporation hitting residents where it hurts the most—right in the pocket. I strongly oppose this potential increase which would require New Yorkers, especially those downstate, to pay for the MTA’s hemorrhaging of money. New Yorkers are already subjected to some of the highest taxes and rates in the country. Living in New York is already difficult enough, now they’re adding to that degree of difficulty by making it harder to move around in the City in which we live.”
