Larkin Bill To Provide Cold War Vets Property Tax Relief Passes State Senate
June 7, 2016
Senator Bill Larkin (R-C-I, 39th District) is pleased to announce that his legislation to provide Cold War Veterans with property tax relief was passed by the New York State Senate this week. The legislation gives school districts the ability to provide eligible Cold War veterans an exemption on their school taxes.
“Last week, Governor Cuomo signed the Veterans’ Equality Act into law giving ALL qualifying veterans access to state retirement benefits and credits that they earned,” said Senator Larkin. “Now, in a similar vein, I am hopeful that the Governor will sign this bill into law to ensure that all of New York’s Cold War veterans have access to the same tax relief that other veterans have been afforded.”
"While many Cold War veterans never saw combat, they signed up to defend our nation in one of its most perilous times—times where our nation came close to another World War and nuclear destruction. For their service in the face of these potential horrors, they deserve, like any other veteran, access to this important tax relief,” said Senator Larkin.
Under current law, Cold War veterans are not able to receive a property exemption on their school taxes like most other veterans. Senator Larkin’s legislation addresses this inequality to ensure that all of New York’s veterans have access to this important tax relief program.
The legislation passed the Assembly earlier this month and now can be delivered to the Governor’s office for action.
