Senator Stewart-Cousins Congratulates Student at Yonkers School 9 for Winning State Senate Earth Day Poster Contest

Yonkers, NY - New York State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins visited School 9 in Yonkers to congratulate Kalel V. Erin Arupio, grade 6, for winning the New York State Senate’s 2017 Earth Day poster contest in the 35th Senate District. Each year, the New York State Senate sponsors this poster contest for students in grades K-6 to promote environmental education and sustainability. The theme of this year’s Earth Day celebration is “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”

“Kalel’s unique poster urges us to recycle technology the proper way, since disposing of it in the trash can have tremendously harmful effects on the environment,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “I commend Kalel and all of this year’s participants for their hard work and commitment to protecting the Earth. I’d also like to recognize their parents and teachers for inspiring their kids to express their concern about our planet in a creative and thoughtful way.”

Over 160 students from schools in Yonkers, Irvington, Hastings-on-Hudson, Ardsley, Hartsdale, New Rochelle, and Tarrytown submitted posters in honor of Earth Day this year, and each participant received a certificate for their efforts to help save the environment.
