Albany, NY - Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) inducted Yonkers resident Harold Dworetzky into the New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame this afternoon.
This annual recognition is bestowed upon a veteran from each Senate District in the state who has not only served valiantly in the military but has also performed outstanding service on behalf of their community as a civilian.
“It’s an honor to know Harold, and I’m proud to recognize his outstanding service to our country and community,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “Harold is a remarkable leader and an exceptional man who continued serving his nation long after his tenure in the military. He’s fought for countless people throughout Yonkers and beyond and his commitment to helping others succeed is unparalleled. I’m grateful to have the opportunity today to induct him into the Veterans’ Hall of Fame.”
Harold was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War, and he pushed up his draft number in order to enlist sooner. He was assigned to the Twentieth Infantry and served as an ordnance specialist MOS. He eventually achieved the rank of E5 Sergeant and was offered a warrant officer rank to stay in the service.
Harold then opened an automotive repair business and enrolled in college, supplementing his education allotment from the Veterans’ Administration with incomes from various jobs. He earned an associate degree in automotive engineering from SUNY Morrisville, a Bachelor of Science degree in teaching from SUNY Oswego, and a master’s degree in educational administration from New York University. He has also worked to earn a doctorate degree from New York University and, for thirty-eight years, has led a distinguished career as an educator.
Harold is an active volunteer who has served as chairman of the Yonkers Central Committee of Veterans Organizations, which offers assistance to the 18,000 veterans who live in Yonkers. He also serves as a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Korean War Veterans. He has represented his community in myriad leadership roles at Yonkers Post #68 Jewish War Veterans, Westchester County Jewish War Veterans, and the Yonkers Committee of Veterans Organizations. He has also served as an assistant Boy Scout Leader, chairperson of the Sullivan County Red Cross, a member of the National Ski Patrol, and chairperson for National Skills USA.
