Hoylman: Jane Schreibman’s act of valor is a true embodiment of the slogan: ‘if you see something, say something.’”
NEW YORK – State Senator Brad Hoylman (D, WF-Manhattan) presented long-time Chelsea resident Jane Schreibman with the New York State Liberty Medal, the highest civilian honor bestowed by a Member of the New York State Senate, in recognition of her heroic action in reporting the location of a second incendiary device during the September 2016 New York-New Jersey bombings.
The Liberty Medal is intended to recognize service or achievement that goes above and beyond normal distinction. Ms. Schreibman traveled to Albany on May 3 to receive her award on the floor of the Senate Chamber.
On September 17, 2016, a bomb went off in a dumpster on 23rd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, injuring 29 people and shattering windows in the adjacent VISIONS at Selis Manor, a supportive housing development for blind individuals. After receiving a call warning her of the nearby explosion, Jane Schreibman, a photographer and 36-year resident of Chelsea in Senator Hoylman’s district, headed outside to assess the situation, regardless of potential danger. Once outside, Schreibman noticed a cooking pot arrayed with wires and promptly called the authorities, who utilized a police robot to deactivate and remove the rigged device, saving countless lives in the process.
State Senator Brad Hoylman said: “Jane Schreibman’s act of valor is a true embodiment of the slogan: ‘if you see something, say something.’ Thanks to her selflessness and quick thinking, Jane thwarted an insidious plot to create mayhem, saving untold numbers of people from harm. Her bravery is a testament to the smart, caring, and vigilant character of the Chelsea community. I am proud to call Jane a constituent and can think of no more deserving a recipient of the Senate’s highest civilian honor.”
