SENATOR HOYLMAN INDUCTS MANHATTAN VA HOSPITAL INTO NYS SENATE VETERANS’ HALL OF FAME

NEW YORK – State Senator Brad Hoylman (D, WF-Manhattan) nominated the Veteran Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare Hospital for induction into the Veterans’ Hall of Fame. Held each year by the New York State Senate, the Veterans’ Hall of Fame ceremony honors “outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life.” Martina A. Parauda, Director of the facility, traveled to Albany on May 16 to accept the award on behalf of the entire hospital.

Founded in 1954, the Manhattan Campus of the Veteran Affairs New York Harbor Healthcare System treats 22,000 veterans annually. Located at 23rd Street and First Avenue in Senator Hoylman’s district, the hospital has distinguished itself as a center for Cardiovascular Care, with surgeons performing upwards of 150 open heart and 200 neurosurgical procedures per year. The VA New York Harbor Healthcare System also offers specialized and unique programs including the Prosthetic Treatment Center, the largest of its kind in the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In addition to its innovative physical care, the hospital offers a broad scope of Mental Healthcare services, such as support groups for PTSD dedicated to veterans of specific eras, and support for Military Sexual Trauma. As such, the hospital was recently designated a regional hub for the emerging field of telehealth for psychiatry.

For the brave men and women of our armed forces, the scars of war, both mental and physical, often remain long after they’ve returned home. As a state and as a nation, we have an obligation to care for those who have defended our country – and the Manhattan VA hospital does that every single day. I am honored to nominate them to the NYS Veterans’ Hall of Fame.”
