Senator Young, Spectrum, Fredonia and Sunnking Announce 10th Annual “Spring Cleaning" E-Recycling Event
April 4, 2017
ALBANY – Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I– 57th District) has announced that she has partnered with Spectrum, SUNY Fredonia and e-recycler Sunnking to host a free e-recycling event for area residents. The event will take place on Saturday, April 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fredonia's double-tiered parking lot (Lot #7) located off Ring Road on the Fredonia campus.
“This event is popular because everyone has old, broken electronics and small appliances cluttering up their garages and basements. This recycling event is a great way to get rid of these items in an environmentally-friendly way,” Senator Young said.
“We’re excited to be back at SUNY Fredonia again with Senator Cathy Young,” said Mark Fitchett, Spectrum AVP of Field Operations for Western NY. “And it’s Earth Day, so we’re hoping to get a large turnout. These electronic recycling events are a great example of what Earth Day is all about – protecting our environment by disposing of our electronics in a safe and convenient way while keeping hazardous e-waste out of our landfills.”
“Fredonia is excited to continue hosting this popular event, working closely with our partners. Members of Fredonia’s athletics teams as well as campus staff will provide support, and proceeds will benefit a student scholarship,” noted Fredonia Director of Environmental Health & Safety & Sustainability Sarah Laurie. “We have planned to exceed last year’s record participation. It’s a great partnership and we appreciate Senator Young's leadership with this event.”
“The partnership between Senator Young, Spectrum, SUNY Fredonia and Sunnking works well and provides a much needed service to the community,” said Duane Beckett, president, Sunnking, Inc.
During last year’s event, 1,251 vehicles unloaded, filling eight semi-trailers with electronic waste.
Acceptable items include, but are not limited to, laptop and desktop computers, televisions and monitors, printers, scanners, copiers, microwaves, telephones, and other small electronics and appliances. A full list of items that will be accepted during the event can be found at www.sunnking.com/consumer-business/acceptable-materials/.
It is important to note that no more than four TV sets per vehicle will be accepted. Some items that cannot be recycled include: Freon containing devices, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and de-humidifiers; cathode ray tubes; smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; and alkaline batteries.
To help ensure the smoothest flow of traffic, those looking to recycle materials should enter the Fredonia campus from the main entrance at 280 Central Avenue in the Village of Fredonia. Then, take the first right at Ring Road, and follow the road around to the double-tiered parking lot (Lot #7) on the right. Volunteers will be on-hand to provide the unloading of all recycled materials, as well as with traffic direction.
