(Buffalo, NY) – New York State Senator Chris Jacobs (60th SD) announced Buffalo residents Katie Joyce and Meghan Cavanaugh as the 2017 New York State Senate Women of Distinction honorees. At a press conference making the announcement, Jacobs presented the women with formal resolutions and encouraged Western New Yorkers to participate in the Girls on the Run upcoming 5K run at the University at Buffalo’s North campus.
Established in 1998, the Women of Distinction program was created to recognize the historic contributions of New York women who exemplify personal excellence, courage, selflessness, integrity and perseverance, and serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
“Since founding the Buffalo council of Girls on the Run International in 2010, Katie Joyce and Meghan Cavanaugh have inspired and empowered thousands of young women across Western New York to reach their fullest potential while living joyful, healthy and confident lives,” said Senator Jacobs. “The impact they have had on their community has been great, and they are truly worthy of the honor of being named ‘Women of Distinction’,” Jacobs added.
The Buffalo council of Girls on the Run has over 1,400 young women participating from 105 schools across 25 school districts. Through coaching, mentoring, team building, and running, girls receive a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals.
“We are very flattered and humbled by this great honor and would like to thank Senator Jacobs for recognizing our organization,” said Katie Joyce. “We are so proud of the growth exhibited by the young women who go through our program and the accomplishments they achieve. We firmly believe that this recognition is a tribute to them as well,” Meghan Cavanaugh added.
The upcoming 5K race on June 4th is the organization’s primary fundraising event of the year, and the culmination of this year’s program for the current participants. Online registration is open to the public until June 1st while walk up registration is available Saturday June 3rd and Sunday June 4th at the race site.
