Jacobs' Mandate Relief Measure Passes in Senate
Senator Jacobs
June 5, 2017
(Albany, NY) - New York State Senator Chris Jacobs (60th SD), today announced the passage by the full Senate of a bill he sponsored (S5791) that provides mandate relief for local governments by allowing them to tailor the implementation of regulatory requirements to their individual municipalities specific needs and capabilities.
“There is a tremendous amount of diversity in local governments across New York State and a ‘one size fits all approach’ to implementing regulatory mandates is oftentimes illogical and ineffective,” said Senator Jacobs. “By restoring expired provisions and adding new ones to the mandate relief petition process, we are enabling local governments to pursue more efficient and cost-effective ways to carry out regulatory reforms in their unique municipal environments.”
With the passage of Senator Jacobs’ legislation, the state’s Administrative Procedure Act will also be amended to require agencies approving petitions to publish them in the State Register to facilitate the sharing of successful petitions and effective mandate implementations among local governments.
Senator Jacobs’ legislation was part of a larger mandate reform package of more than a dozen bills passed today by the New York State Senate that will reduce mandated costs that drive up local taxes and help local governments save millions of dollars.
