(Kenmore, NY) – New York State Senator Chris Jacobs (60th SD) marked the conclusion of Fire Prevention Week today by announcing a $25,000 state grant for the Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department. The monies were secured by Jacobs during the state budget process, and will be used by the department to purchase new turnout gear for volunteer firefighters.
“I cannot think of a better way to emphasize the importance of fire prevention week than ensuring the safety of the volunteer firefighters who serve and protect our communities,” said Jacobs. “Just as the Kenmore Volunteer Fire Department proactively educates residents on how to increase their safety from fire, we must proactively ensure they have the tools, equipment and clothing to protect their safety when they are putting their lives on the line.”
Turnout gear is also known as a firefighter’s personal protective equipment, and consists of items like fire resistant hoods, pants, coats gloves and boots. Air packs and helmets are also included, and the level of safety and effectiveness of turnout gear is determined by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements. Kenmore’s turnout gear is more than 15 years old and no longer meets the NFPA standards.
“We are very grateful to Senator Jacobs for his leadership and support in securing this much needed funding,” said Kenmore Volunteer Fire Chief Peter D. Breitnauer. “Being able to purchase new turnout gear ensures that we can more effectively respond to fire emergencies, so this funding doesn’t just enhance our safety, but the safety of al village residents,” the Chief concluded.
