(ALBANY, NY) — Soon after being sworn into office on Wednesday, State Senator Chris Jacobs (SD-60) introduced term limits legislation in Albany. Jacobs' term limits bill, S676, would limit the length a member of the New York Assembly or Senate, Governor, Comptroller and Attorney General could be in office to no more than 12 years.
"I made a pledge to residents of Erie County to push for term limits if elected, and I wanted the first piece of legislation I offered on my first day in office to be just that," said Jacobs.
A common element of the more than 20 Albany politicians convicted of crimes over the last two decades is they were in office a very long time. Jacobs pointed out that just between former Senate Leader Dean Skelos and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver — both recently convicted of corruption — they were in office a combined total of 70 years.
"We need more citizen legislators instead of career politicians. We need to send our representatives to Albany to make a difference and then come home again and live under the laws they passed. I believe that is what term limits will achieve," said Jacobs.
