Local Students Go “Inside Albany” With Senator Phillips

          Senator Elaine Phillips (R-7th Senate District) recently welcomed local high school students Emily Cruz (Manhasset), Adi Levin (Port Washington), Lensa Romage (Westbury) and Alexandra Laporte (Westbury) to the State Capitol.

            The four students were in Albany to participate in the League of Women Voters New York State Education Foundation’s 17th annual Students Inside Albany conference.  The conference is designed to increase high school students’ awareness of their responsibility in a representative government and to provide the tools necessary for meeting that responsibility. Students from all across the state come to Albany to learn about state government and how individual citizens can get involved in the policy making process.

            As part of the conference, Emily, Adi, Lensa and Alexandra spent an afternoon “shadowing” Senator Phillips during a recent Senate session. Senator Phillips talked with the four students about her role as a State Senator and what she does on a typical day in Albany when the Senate is in session. Senator Phillips also brought them onto the floor of the Senate Chambers, where they were able to watch legislative debates and votes on bills.
