Senator Elaine Phillips Hosts Leadership Academy

Senator Elaine Phillips, in partnership with Northwell Health, recently hosted a Leadership Academy for elementary and high school students. The theme of the event was “Leadership, Bullying and Social Media,” and was designed to help students develop leadership qualities and skills and discuss strategies to combat bullying.

“Bullying continues to be a problem in schools throughout the country and right here on Long Island, and with the digital age, cyberbullying continues to spread. Elected officials and educators must continue working together to provide students with the means to become young leaders and responsible individuals who understand that they hold the key to ending the bullying epidemic,” Senator Elaine Phillips said. “Thank you to the panel of professionals for your helpful insight and guidance on leadership and bullying. I applaud all of the students who took time out of their weekends to participate in the Academy to help better themselves by learning the qualities and characteristics of being a leader and how to best handle bullying.”

Sewanhaka School District Assistant Superintendent, Regina Agrusa, was the Academy’s guest speaker and the discussion included area high school leaders, Collins Ihaza, a Temple University graduate, Nassau County Detective Pamela Stark and former basketball player Demetrius Taylor. 

Following the discussion, the students and panel took a STEM tour of the Northwell Health facility with Steve Bello, Health Care Administrators, physicians and support leaders.
