Senator Phillips Announces Port Washington's Paul Granger Named to State Drinking Water Quality Council
September 29, 2017
Senator Elaine Phillips’ New York State Senate nominee, Paul Granger, has been selected to serve on the new New York State Drinking Water Quality Council that will address water issues across that state and will guide New York’s actions to ensure safe and clean drinking water for all residents
“I was honored to nominate Paul Granger to serve on the Drinking Water Quality Council and am thrilled the Governor has appointed him to serve in this capacity,” Senator Elaine Phillips said. “His expertise, coupled with his experience as Superintendent of the Port Washington Water District, will be invaluable to the Council and will ensure that both Long Island and 7th District are well represented.
The Council will cover a wide range of water quality issues and will seek industry experts to complement the expertise of the council members when needed. The Council will first make recommendations to create enforceable Maximum Contaminant Levels for three emerging contaminants — 1,4-dioxane, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS).
“Drinking water is a necessity, not a luxury, and ensuring our water remains safe will always be a top priority of mine.” said Senator Phillips. “The Drinking Water Council will be a vital resource as we look for additional ways to strengthen, modernize and protect critical water supplies for all Long Islanders and residents of communities across the state. I am confident that Paul Granger and the entire council will work to address the immediate concern of safeguarding our water supplies.”
Recommendations by the Council will be made to the New York State Department of Health on appropriate periods for testing emerging contaminants; the best ways for public notification in the event a contaminant is found; and whether and when to remove contaminants from the emerging contaminants list.
The first meeting of the Drinking Water Quality Council will take place on October 2 at 10 a.m. at SUNY Stony Brook.
