Senator Phillips Awards Liberty Medal to Hero Manorhaven Village Employee

Senator Elaine Phillips (R-Manhasset) recently presented the New York State Senate’s Liberty Medal to Lori Vlahos, a Manorhaven Village code enforcement officer and Port Washington resident, for rescuing an elderly resident with Alzheimer’s disease.

“Lori Vlahos epitomizes everything a public servant should be.  When she saw someone in trouble, she instantly came to her aid, cared for her and got her the help she needed.  Her quick thinking and compassion helped prevent a tragedy.  It’s my pleasure to award her this much deserved honor,” said Senator Phillips.

Ms. Vlahos was on patrol on Saturday, January 21st when she saw an elderly woman in pajamas laying on the ground, soaking wet and shaking.  Unbeknownst to Ms. Vlahos, the woman was an Alzheimer’s patient who had been outdoors in the cold for approximately six hours.  Ms. Vlahos immediately wrapped her in a blanket for warmth and spent twenty minutes helping the woman remember her name and address so that her family could be contacted.  She also stayed by the woman’s side, caring for her until an ambulance arrived.

The New York State Senate Liberty Medal is the highest civilian honor a State Senator can bestow on a New Yorker.  It is awarded to citizens who have merited special commendation for their actions on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers and their community.
