Senator Phillips Calls for Passage of New Anti-Gang Measures

     Senator Elaine Phillips (R-Manhasset) is calling for the passage of the New York State Criminal Street Gang Act to help remove gangs from our communities and prevent them from preying on children.  Senator Phillips is a cosponsor of the legislation.

     “Gangs are not just an inner city problem; they’re committing horrific acts of violence in every region of the state, including here on Long Island.  Aggressive action is needed to take these violent criminals off the streets and prevent them from preying upon children.  This legislation does just that,” said Senator Phillips.

     The legislation (S2410) would:

• Strengthen penalties for gang-related violence;
• Create new penalties for recruiting children into a gang, including while on school grounds;
• Enhance and support prevention programs to help children stay away from gangs and off the streets.

     One of the most heinous incidents of gang violence on Long Island occurred last fall, when two teenage girls from Brentwood were beaten to death while walking down the street.  Several alleged MS-13 gang members were arrested in connection with the murders earlier this month.  

     “This is a comprehensive approach; strengthening penalties for criminals while supporting prevention programs to keep children out of gangs.  Albany needs to take action and give communities stronger tools to stop gang violence and protect our children,” Senator Phillips added.
