Senator Elaine Phillips (R-Manhasset) recently named Port Washington resident Mindy Germain a 2017 New York State Senate Woman of Distinction.
“Mindy Germain is a very passionate, dedicated and talented woman who has worked tirelessly to give back to her community. From safeguarding our drinking water and teaching kids how they can protect the environment to enhancing downtown Port Washington, she is literally changing our area for the better. It’s my pleasure to award Mindy this well-deserved honor in recognition of all she has done to make our community a better place,” said Senator Phillips.
Ms. Germain’s desire to give back to the community began when she saw a group of volunteers picking up litter while out walking her infant daughter. Inspired by their devotion to their hometown, she joined the group, Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington, and became its Executive Director. Over the last ten years, she has tirelessly engineered community cleanups, beautification projects, downtown revitalization efforts and family events that bring people together with their neighbors. She has also collaborated with the Port Washington School District to help thousands of students learn about the importance of protecting our environment and ecosystem.
Ms. Germain is a leader in protecting Long Island’s drinking water. She has led the Western Nassau County Aquifer Committee and played a key role in delivering the first comprehensive groundwater study for Long Island in decades. The study will provide local municipalities with modern data to help prevent contamination and address threats to Long Island’s drinking water. As a Port Washington Water District Commissioner, she has worked to enhance conservation efforts, increase public transparency and save taxpayer dollars through collaboration with other providers.
A graduate of Syracuse University, Ms. Germain is also a member of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Long Island Water Conference and the Nassau-Suffolk Water Commissioners Association
In recognition of her many community contributions, Ms. Germain has been named a Woman of Distinction by the Nassau County Legislature, is a member of the Town of North Hempstead’s Women’s Roll of Honor, and was honored by the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce for outstanding service to the Port Washington business community.
Ms. Germain and her husband, Victor, reside in Port Washington and are the proud parents of three children: Sophie, Gabriel and Harry.
The Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program recognizes outstanding women living and working in New York State whose contributions have greatly enriched the quality of life in their communities and beyond. Ms. Germain’s biography and photo were displayed in the Legislative Office Building as part of an exhibit honoring the Women of Distinction from across New York State.
