Senator Phillips Welcomes Westbury High School Ninth-Graders To Nassau Community College

Senator Elaine Phillips today welcomed Westbury High School ninth-graders on the first day of school to their new classrooms at the Nassau Community College (NCC) North Annex

Earlier this summer, Westbury Superintendent Eudes Budhai informed Senator Phillips of spacing issues at the High School and Middle School and the urgent need to lease space to prevent an overcrowding situation during the 2017-2018 school year.

Senator Phillips immediately contacted the State Education Department Commissioner MaryEllen Elia regarding the school’s need for additional space. While the original request was denied, Senator Phillips worked with school and SED officials to remedy the situation in an effort to provide the best learning environment for Westbury students.

"It was a pleasure to have worked closely with SED Commissioner Elia and Superintendent Budhai to provide classroom space at the Annex as a solution to Westbury’s overcrowding situation,” Senator Elaine Phillips said. “I am extremely pleased that we were able to provide the children with a safe learning environment.”

Last week, the New York State Department of Education granted the Westbury School District permission to lease classroom space at Nassau Community College to alleviate overcrowding at the high school.

The agreement sends nearly 400 ninth-graders to NCC for their Westbury High School classes this year.
