Senator Amedore Votes to Impose Term Limits on Legislative Leaders, Committee Chairs

Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Amedore to establish term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs advanced through the New York State Senate today.

The bill (S.1229) imposes an eight year limit for any member of the legislature to serve as Temporary President of the Senate, Speaker of the Assembly, Minority Leader of the Senate, Minority Leader of the Assembly, or as the Chairman of a legislative committee.

“Establishing term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs will empower more members of the Legislature, leading to a more well-rounded, representative government that is able to better serve all New Yorkers,” said Senator Amedore.

The Senate has previously voluntarily adopted term limits for legislative leaders and committee chairs under internal rules, but the Assembly has not. This bill would codify the term limits in law for both the Senate and the Assembly.

The bill was sent to the Assembly, where it is sponsored by Assemblymember Sandra Galef.

Senator Amedore has also reintroduced legislation (S.887) this session that would impose a term limit of twelve years (six, two-year terms) on members of the New York State Senate and Assembly.
