HERKIMER, 05/18/17 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I/Ref-Oneonta) today joined Village of Herkimer officials to unveil the village’s new fire truck. Senator Seward secured $250,000 in state funding to assist in the purchase of the $450,000 pumper truck.
“It is imperative that our first responders are properly equipped – to protect life and property and to ensure their own safety,” said Senator Seward. “This new fire truck checks all the boxes and the state funding eases the burden on the village budget and local property taxpayers.”
Village of Herkimer Mayor Anthony Brindisi said, “The safety of our citizens is our number one priority. However, financial stress, due in part to the 2013 flood, makes it difficult to afford major expenditures. This grant from Senator Seward is a real difference maker and will protect lives and property in Herkimer.”
Village of Herkimer Fire Chief John Spanfelner said, “When an emergency call comes in and our crews are dispatched they are never certain exactly what they will encounter, so it is vital that they are equipped to face all circumstances. The village’s new pump truck will be a major asset to our firefighters’ ability to keep the public safe as they meet the many challenges and dangers they encounter. Senator Seward’s steadfast support of our department is greatly appreciated.”
The $250,000 grant secured by Senator Seward through the State and Municipal Facilities Program is being used to help with the purchase of a new Pierce Saber 70 pumper truck. The new truck replaces the department’s 1987 E-One Engine, which has been out of operation since December 2015.
“Earlier this month the Herkimer Village Fire Department rescued two individuals from a burning building on Main Street, demonstrating the real-life heroics our firefighters perform. This new pumper will improve the department’s ability to respond the next time an emergency call comes in. I am proud to partner with the village and am confident this state grant will lead to a safer community,” Seward added.
