CORTLAND, 09/27/17 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined officials from the YMCA of Cortland to announce a $150,000 state grant to fund capital improvements.
“The Cortland YMCA is a true community hub,” said Senator Seward. “The individuals who work and volunteer at the Y are dedicated to helping families and individuals reach their fullest potential in terms of spirit, mind and body. This $150,000 state grant will help ensure that the Cortland YMCA is properly equipped and primed to continue as a valuable resource for people of all ages and abilities.”
YMCA of Cortland Executive Director David Hamilton said, “The YMCA provides families and individuals with beneficial programs and services that are affordable and accessible. As we help people achieve their goals we also have our own obstacles to overcome – costly building repairs, equipment maintenance and upgrades, and other essential improvements. Senator Seward’s support will help us meet our ongoing demands as we strive to provide the greater Cortland community with a first-class facility and programs.”
Among the items to be included as part of the capital project: roof repair; replacement or refinishing of floors in the gym, exercise room, fitness room (strength area); repair of natatorium air handler; additional heating in gym; replacement of equipment in the gym and natatorium; plumbing and boiler repairs; parking lot sealing and expansion; and vestibule repair and replacement.
Senator Seward has consistently supported YMCAs in his senate district and across New York State. In 2016, he was honored as a recipient of the “Y Champion” award from the Alliance of New York State YMCAs which represents the 40 independent Ys across the state.
“I am proud to advocate for our Ys to help make certain they are able to maintain services and enact innovative programs that serve so many. YMCAs are vital community building blocks and Cortland is fortunate to have such a positive resource,” Seward concluded.
The $150,000 grant is under the state’s Economic Development Assistance Program (EDAP) and is administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).
