State Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) last weekend hosted a successful e-waste recycling event and rain barrel giveaway at Calvary Baptist Church in Jamaica.
“I am pleased that so many people chose to take part in this event,” Sanders said. “I am proud to be able to provide this service which is one small way we can work toward a greener, more sustainable environment.”
Sanders' office assisted dozens of constituents in disposing of their old, unwanted electronics in a safe and responsible way. Not only is this better for the environment, but it helps people avoid getting a $100 fine for throwing these items out with the regular trash, which is no longer allowed as of January 1, 2015. Two full trucks hauled away items that included TVs, computers, laptops, DVD players, phones and much more.
Sanders also gave away 60 rain barrels, each of which can hold 65 gallons of water. Rain barrels capture storm water from your roof and store it for future uses like watering lawns or gardens. Conserving water saves money, helps the environment and reduces the burden on the city's drinking water system during the summer’s hottest days.
We would like to thank our partner Lower Eastside Ecology Center and the NYC Department of Environmental Protection for helping to facilitate this event.
