Senator Sanders Gives Away 24,000 Pounds of Free Compost
October 28, 2017
Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Rochdale Village, Far Rockaway) partnered with New York City Department of Sanitation to host a free compost give away event at the Samuel Huntington School - P.S. 40 in South Jamaica.
Over 140 people arrived to collect a free 40-pound bag of compost. Many residents and garden groups traveled from as far as Lauralton and the Rockaways to take advantage of this free event. A total of 24,000 pounds of compost was handed out. While residents were busy loading up their vehicles, the resounding message throughout the day was “the timing was perfect.”
“I see winners on both sides here today,” Senator Sanders said. “However, the biggest winner is planet Earth. There is so much to appreciate about compost, we are reducing the city’s volume of waste while lowing our carbon footprint. The City of New York understands the environmental benefits composting has on plant life, it is a sensible solution to waste disposal in a city that never sleeps.”
When mixed with soil, compost can help retain the soil’s moisture and nutrients producing healthier plants, fruits and vegetables.
