Senator Tedisco Chairs Social Services Committee, Moves "Kayleigh Mae’s Law" to the Floor

Senator Jim Tedisco chaired his first committee meeting today in the Senate, the Social Services Committee. The Committee passed legislation that will now move to the Floor of the Senate a very important public safety measure to protect children sponsored by Senator Betty Little, "Kayleigh Mae’s Law." This bill is named for Kayleigh Mae Cassell of Kingsbury, NY, a 13-month old little girl who was found dead in her Kingsbury home in 2015. She had been badly abused, and then somehow drugged with cocaine and heroin. This bill (S.137) directs child protective services to test a child under the age of 3, who was in the vicinity of a drug arrest of a parent, guardian or person legally responsible, for the presence of controlled substances. Assemblyman Felix Ortiz is carrying the measure in the Assembly.
