Senator Jim Tedisco, an alumnus of Union College, who holds numerous athletic records at the school for playing basketball including as an Academic All-American and being elected to the school’s athletic hall of fame, recently honoted the Union College Men’s Basketball Team and Head Coach Chris Murphy for capturing the 2017 Liberty League Men’s Basketball Championship and winning a bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Tedisco presented the team with a copy of a resolution he sponsored that unanimously passed the New York State Senate.
The 2017 Union College Men’s Basketball Team defeated Hobart College in a 71-67 victory to capture the Liberty League Championship. The team ended their season with an impressive 17-11 overall record. After winning the Liberty League Championship, Union received an automatic bid to compete in its fourth NCAA Division III Tournament and advanced to the Second Round of the Tournament.
Tedisco is also pictured with three of his former teammates from the 1972 Union College Men’s Basketball Team who are celebrating the 45th anniversary of their historic season. Pictured L-R are Geoff Walker, Bob Pezzano, Tedisco, and Mike Doyle. Tedisco’s 1972 Union team had a then college-record 19-3 season and a 15-game winning streak but were not allowed to play in the NCAA tournament due to a clause in the school’s league rules which prohibited post-season play. The student body were so livid over being barred from the tournament that they almost burned down the college president’s house.
