Mt. Vernon - Senator Jeff Klein, joined by Mt. Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas, announced $56,958 in state funding for a much-anticipated capital project, which will improve pedestrian and transportation safety and beautify the streetscape along the busy business corridor in the Fleetwood section of Mt. Vernon. The announcement on Thursday night preceded a tour the elected officials took of the planned project area, which was led by the President of the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association, Mike Justino.
“Mt. Vernon is a wonderful city with a bustling Fleetwood business corridor that serves many of my constituents. I’m proud to secure these funds for this crucial project, which will enhance safety, beautify the streets and boost the local economy,”said Senator Klein.
“Thank you to Senator Jeff Klein for his leadership in obtaining crucial state funds for Mount Vernon. Senator Klein shares our vision for smooth streets, strong economy, and tax relief. We believe in safe, walkable communities with thriving parks to enhance quality of life. My administration will continue to work with the Senator to implement programs that grow our economy, create jobs, and relieve property tax pressure. We are transforming our streets and making strategic investments that will move Mount Vernon forward. We are grateful for Senator Klein’s partnership in seizing new opportunities for the new Mount Vernon,” said Mt. Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas.
“I’m thrilled that Senator Klein has secured state funds for this much-needed community project, which is moving forward nicely. The whole city of Mt. Vernon will benefit immensely from the pedestrian and transportation safety improvements planned for the Fleetwood business district and the immediate area around the Fleetwood station,”said President of the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association, Mike Justino.
The project, which targets the streets surrounding the Fleetwood Metro-North station, will include numerous improvements, including:
- new pedestrian countdown crosswalk signals
- new decorative lighting poles
- new standing yield/stop signs
- new crosswalks and the repainting of existing ones
These improvements will also aid the local businesses, as the area will become more friendly to foot traffic.
