Senator John A. DeFrancisco held his 2017 New York State Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Awards ceremony on June 2nd at the State Office Building in Syracuse. Senator DeFrancisco recognized 16 local high school students for their leadership efforts.  These students were nominated earlier in the year for the award by their teachers, guidance counselors and/or other school faculty members.

February was Youth Leadership Month and the New York State Senate helped highlight the occasion by encouraging participation in the NYS Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Awards program, which was designed to recognize the outstanding young students who will become our State’s future leaders.

The annual program recognizes junior and senior high school students who excel academically and have exhibited leadership through extracurricular or volunteer activities.  Students must be nominated by a teacher, administrator, counselor or other school faculty member.  A student can ask a faculty member to nominate them or a faculty member can initiate the process by recommending a student deserving of special recognition.

Nominations were submitted online and included an attached letter of recommendation by the nominating faculty member. The nommiated student also shared a short essay (maximum 500 words) describing his/her accomplishments in school and in the community.
