Senator Brooks Pushes for Increased State Aid to Nassau County Public Schools
March 6, 2017
Long Island, NY- Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) is fighting for an increase in state aid to Nassau County public schools in the 2017-2018 New York State Budget to provide relief to straddled taxpayers and school districts. Currently, Nassau County on average receives 18% of its funding from state aid, burdening taxpayers with 82% of the cost of education. Senator Brooks is proposing that New York State pay its fair share of the cost of education, and increase state aid to the Nassau County school districts so that the state's contribution reaches at least 25%.
"Nassau County taxpayers pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, and its residents disproportionately fund the cost of education," said Senator John E. Brooks. "Taxpayers and schools are left strapped, and the quality of our children's education is jeopardized when they are left with limited funding. It's time for the state to step up and unburden Long Islanders by paying its fair share of education costs."
Brooks concluded, “We must do all we can to provide all students with equal access to a quality education, and that begins with increasing state aid for Nassau County public schools."
