New York Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is once again joining Long Island Cares for its annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge. Over the next couple of months, Senator Flanagan’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies in an effort to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry and to ensure that Long Island families in need are able to care for their pets.
Baxter’s Pet Pantry was created by Long Island Cares in 2009, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.
To make it convenient for donors, a donation box will be outside Senator Flanagan’s office, which is located at 260 Middle Country Road. Residents can drop off pet supplies at the office during normal business hours from now through Friday, April 28th.
Long Island Cares accepts donations for all types of family pets including dogs, cats, fish, birds and others. The organization has stated that its most needed pet items are:
- 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food
- Canned food for dogs and cats
- Dog and Cat Treats
- Collars and Leashes
- Bird Seed
- Fish Food
- Cat Litter
- Small New Toys
Long Island Cares requests that all pet food be unopened and in its original packaging.
“To many families, pets are a source of comfort to both kids and adults alike and they are an important part of many households. Thanks to the selfless dedication of the men and women of Long Island Cares, Baxter’s Pet Pantry helps families in need care for their special family companions, and it is our privilege to join with them in this undertaking. We invite everyone in our community to help Long Island Cares,” stated Senator Flanagan.
