(Albany, NY) New York State Senator Jose M. Serrano called for the passage of his Dignity for Immigrants bill (S4075A). This legislation would protect immigrants from being victimized by unjust deportation procedures, including the Trump Administration’s recent Executive Order which unfairly discriminates against members of the immigrant community.
Senator Serrano's Dignity for Immigrants legislation would prohibit police from detaining and deporting a person due to their undocumented immigration status unless they have been previously convicted of a violent crime. Unlike criminal detainers, which are supported by probable cause, an immigration detainer does not require a warrant or an established standard of proof of a crime. Serrano's bill would stop individuals, who are not dangerous criminals or national security threats, from being persecuted solely for their immigration status.
"Our nation was built by generations of hardworking immigrants who came to America seeking new opportunities. Immigrants are the lifeblood of my district- and of this country and I will continue working to make New York a safe place for all who seek the American dream," said Senator Serrano. "New York has always been the gateway to our nation and a leader in welcoming new Americans to our shores. Today, I urge leadership, and my colleagues in the New York State Senate to join me in fighting to protect the rights of all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status."
Senator Serrano has been a staunch supporter of the rights of immigrants both in the 29th Senate District and throughout New York State. He has been at the forefront of the fight against unjust deportations that tear apart families and weaken communities, as the founder of the campaign East Harlem Against Deportation and is a major supporter and sponsor of various pieces of legislation designed to help the immigrant communities.
