Senator Serrano proudly co-sponsored the 5th Annual Fair Housing Symposium held by the NYC Commission on Human Rights, in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the NYC Fair Housing Law. NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Assembly Member Latoya Joyner, and Council Members Vanessa Gibson, Rafael Salamanca, and Ritchie Torres also co-sponsored the event.
This year's symposium was held at Hostos Community College and was largely attended by community members and service providers. The first session of the afternoon consisted of a training for attorneys, advocates, and service providers on how to identify and litigate tenant harassment and source of income cases under the Human Rights Law.
There were also panel discussions led by experienced service providers, community leaders, and specialists from the NYC Commission on Human Rights. The day ended with a tenant resource fair in the evening so constituents could have an opportunity to meet with attorneys and advocates one-on-one and to learn about the kind of protections afforded to them under the NYC Human Rights Law. Constituents had a chance to meet with Senator Serrano's office about housing issues they are currently dealing with.
