Senator Serrano Expresses Concerns to NYCHA about Holmes Towers Development
June 9, 2017
Senator Serrano signed on to a letter spearheaded by Congressman Maloney expressing concerns local community members and elected officials have about the selected development plan for the playground at Holmes Towers. Many tenants are outraged by the proposal and concerned that they are losing light, air and their playground and receiving very little in return. Senator Serrano and his colleagues feel that the proposal contradicts NYCHA’s mission to provide affordable housing and uses city property for luxury housing.
"We cannot allow tenants wishes to be ignored, and we must ensure that whatever plans are selected are not finalized in the dead of night. I am the sponsor of legislation in the State Senate that would require a ULURP for any type of development on NYCHA land, making sure there is a strong layer of community input. I am proud to stand with my colleagues in advocating for the community and fighting to ensure their voices are heard." - Senator José M. Serrano
