Senator Jose Peralta Unveils Capital Improvement Projects for I.S. 141 in Astoria
December 7, 2017
Today, State Senator Jose Peralta announced state funding for much-needed capital improvement projects for The Steinway Intermediate School 141Q, located in Astoria. Senator Peralta was able to secure funding of $105,000 for the proposed projects that would level the street on one side of the building for beautification purposes and would renovate one bathroom in the school. More than 1,100 students are enrolled in the school. The principal, Miranda Pavlou, parents, educators and students were present during the announcement, which took place in the school’s auditorium.
“Students are the present and the future of our communities, and this is why we must ensure we provide them with the best possible learning environment. It is crucial that students attend class in a comfortable and dynamic setting. I am glad I was able to secure state funding so the school can go ahead with these capital improvement projects,” said Senator Peralta.
“When we consider all for which we are thankful at IS 141 this holiday season, at the top of the list is the generosity of Senator Peralta. Senator Peralta's grant to our school supports our celebrated Respect for All environment tremendously. The renovation and installation of a gender neutral restroom for students in our building will further our mission to maintain a school culture that respects and values all students and fosters understanding of gender identity within our school community,” said Principal Pavlou. “Each year we take great pride in beautifying our physical environment in order for our school community and the greater Astoria community at-large to enjoy our beautiful gardens in the front and rear of our building. Thanks to Senator Peralta, our respect for the beauty of nature will be extended to the 38th Street side of our building where ground will be broken in order for us to have yet another flowering garden for all members of the community to enjoy. Lastly, Senator Peralta will generously be helping to fund the installation of interior cameras in order for us to continue our great tradition of educating children in the most nurturing and safe environment possible. Thank you, Senator Peralta, for supporting our awarded Respect for All School in each of these capacities.”
The proposal includes leveling the 38th Street side of the school building to build a garden, installing security cameras and renovating one of the two bathrooms at the main entrance of the school, an academic center that is highly involved with its surrounding Astoria community.
Assistant Principals Vanessa Williams and Lori Adamo were also present during the announcement. Additionally, members of the PTA and the School leadership team were also in attendance.
Senator Peralta was able to secure state funding to numerous schools in his district. Some of the projects at other schools include:
P.S./I.S. 127: New air conditioning.
P.S. 69: Upgrade the Public Address System.
P.S. 89: Upgrade the school’s auditorium and 44 new air condition units.
I.S. 227: Upgrade the electrical system in all classrooms.
