Washington Heights, NY — Senator Marisol Alcantara (D-Manhattan) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s Executive Order regarding “sanctuary cities”:
“I am saddened and angered by President Trump’s decision to follow through on the divisive and bigoted rhetoric that characterized his campaign. Attempting to withdraw federal funds from “sanctuary cities” would not only hurt undocumented immigrants, but also anyone who uses city services or who has an interest in the financial health of local governments. Building a wall on the border with Mexico would represent a massive waste of government resources on a largely symbolic project. Requiring local police departments to share arrest data with federal immigration enforcement would further divide the police from the communities they serve and discourage undocumented people from reporting crimes. Publicizing the crimes of undocumented immigrants, as the administration intends, would associate Latinos with criminal action and encourage racial profiling and even retaliatory violence. It is now sadly clear that President Trump does not intend to govern for all Americans, but instead to enable the most extreme and divisive elements of his coalition. It is the duty of elected officials at every level of government to hold the administration accountable and stand behind the communities that are under attack.”
