Statement from Senator Marisol Alcantara on Hostile Amendment
January 30, 2017
I’m glad that the Senate adopted a much-needed piece of legislation that I sponsored today that will help prevent teen suicide, an issue that disproportionately affects Latinas. One in seven Latino youths attempt suicide and educators need the tools to help address serious mental health topics in schools. However, a hostile immigration amendment was attached to my legislation today solely for the purposes of political gamesmanship. I ran for the Senate to represent people and address policy, not to play politics. I’m saddened by the political games that I witnessed today and I hope that it is the last time that Senate showboating interferes with two issues near and dear to my heart: protecting young Latinas and immigration policy.
