Senator Helming Announces Speed Limit Reduction for Route 318 in Tyre

GENEVA – In an effort to protect local residents, Senator Pam Helming worked with the Town of Tyre in Seneca County and the New York State Department of Transportation to achieve a speed limit reduction on a stretch of State Route 318 that intersects with State Route 414. The reduction comes after Tyre Town Supervisor Ron McGreevy contacted Senator Helming requesting assistance to lower the speed limit to increase traffic safety.

The speed limit on State Route 318 a half mile west and a half-mile east of the intersection with State Route 414 will be lowered to 50 mph, with the original limits expanded by 1,100 feet in either direction to allow for appropriate sign placement and an enforceable reduced speed zone.

“This speed limit reduction is the result of much communication and coordination among myself, Supervisor McGreevy, Seneca County, and the Town of Tyre, and the New York State Department of Transportation. With a new housing development and other new growth in Tyre, Supervisor McGreevy and several residents felt that there was a noticeable increase in traffic volume with a potential to cause an unsafe situation on the roadways. Supervisor McGreevy felt this situation required a speed limit reduction, and he contacted my office and the NYSDOT to see if we could work toward a solution. Together, we achieved this reduction to create a safer environment for Tyre residents and visitors. It was great to work with the NYSDOT, the Town of Tyre, and Seneca County to make this important change and help better protect local residents. I appreciate Supervisor McGreevy’s leadership and his taking the time to contact me,” Senator Helming said.

“The Town of Tyre is experiencing unprecedented growth in the State Routes 318 and 414 corridor. In addition, Seneca County is currently in the process of constructing a multimillion-dollar sewer project along Route 318 in the towns of Tyre and Junius to encourage further economic growth in this area. I sincerely appreciate Senator Helming's efforts in addressing the concerns of our local residents and look forward to keeping the issue of highway safety a high priority in our community,” Supervisor McGreevy said.

NYSDOT will follow up in a year once the Pineview Circle development along State Route 318 is completed and inhabited. Officials will continue to look at other solutions, including pavement markings that could slow motorists and improve overall safety on the roadway.
