Senator Pamela A. Helming (R,C,I-Canandaigua) stands with Lyons Town Historian Carol Bailey, dressed in costume as a suffragist, while speaking to an audience at the Ohman Theatre in Lyons about women’s right to vote and women’s issues of today during a VoteTilla event Tuesday, July 18, 2017. The VoteTilla, a project organized by the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House to commemorate the 100th anniversary of women earning the right to vote in New York State, is a fleet of canal boats that traveled the Erie Canal from Seneca Falls to Rochester and stopped in canal towns along the route to mark the occasion. As the first female representative of the 54th District, Senator Helming was invited to take part in the Lyons event.
“In the last century since women earned the right to vote in New York State, we have made great strides, but we still have so far to go in terms of equal pay for equal work, job and career opportunities, entrepreneurship and business ownership, and support for women and families. I appreciate the past achievements of the suffragists, and I hope to continue to pave the way for our youth,” Senator Helming said.
Senator Helming represents the 54th Senate District, which consists of Seneca and Wayne Counties, parts of Cayuga and Ontario Counties, and the towns of Lansing and Webster. For more information, please visit Senator Helming’s website, or follow @SenatorHelming on Facebook or Twitter.
