Senator Helming Visits Historic Three Bears Buildings in Ovid

OVID – Senator Pam Helming toured the Three Bears buildings in Ovid on Tuesday, Oct. 31 to learn about the history of the buildings and the efforts to restore these structures. With Phyllis Motill, Vice President of the Friends of the Three Bears, leading the way, Senator Helming visited the largest of the three buildings – known as Papa Bear, which formerly held the county courtroom. She also saw Mama Bear – the middle building in terms of size and location – that formerly housed the County Clerk’s Office, the library, and then the Sheriff’s Office. Ovid was the county seat when Seneca County was founded in 1804, and then Waterloo became the county seat in 1819.

“From the Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls to Waterloo, the Birthplace of Memorial Day, Seneca County is alive with both local and national history. Ovid is no exception, and the Three Bears buildings stand as a tribute to its status as the original county seat. It was so great to tour these buildings and learn more about the efforts to renovate and maintain them. I wish Phyllis and the whole organization much success as they continue to pursue renovations,” Senator Helming said.
