As part of her ongoing efforts to promote literacy and improve educational opportunities for young people, State Senator Patty Ritchie has announced she has delivered $6,000 to help support a program that will allow elementary students in the Madrid-Waddington Central School District to publish their own books.
“When we encourage students to use their imaginations, we can make learning—and in this case, reading and writing—fun,” said Senator Patty Ritchie.
“In doing so, we’re helping students build the skills they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom. I am pleased to deliver this funding, which will help make students ‘young authors’ and improve literacy in the Madrid-Waddington Central School District.”
“Learning to read and write is a fundamental skill that is necessary for a child's future academic success,” said Madrid-Waddington Central School Superintendent Eric Burke.
“This funding will allow our elementary students to write and publish their own book while, hopefully at the same time, inspire them to build upon skills they will use throughout their lives. We are grateful to Senator Ritchie for this funding and her continued efforts to help improve student reading and writing skills.”
This funding builds on Senator Ritchie’s past efforts to promote literacy in schools throughout the region she represents. Earlier this year, she delivered $5,000 to support reading programs in schools throughout Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties.
In addition, she was recently named Chair of the Senate Select Committee on Libraries, a new role that will allow Senator Ritchie to advocate more strongly for local libraries and the opportunities for learning they offer patrons.
