ALBANY, NY - Keeping commuters, businesses and families on the road is vital to local economies, and the condition of local bridges is a key element in fostering our economic health. Senator Terrence Murphy is continuing to work to secure funds to improve our infrastructure, and is pleased to announce he has secured $4.5 million from the Department of Transportation to repair bridges in Westchester and Putnam Counties. The project, part of Round One of the Bridge New York initiative, will provide maintenance work to correct or prevent problems related to the deterioration of a variety of bridge components.

"Our bridges are an integral part of everyday travel. They help keep commerce moving through the Hudson Valley," Senator Murphy said. "These critically needed bridge and roadway projects will ensure driver safety and help support New York's long-term economic vitality."

"Receiving this additional State support, on the heels of our $2 million dollar Regional Economic Development grant to revitalize Brewster, is a tremendous gain for Putnam Lake," said Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell. "I'm grateful to Senator Murphy for his strong representation and to all who have partnered with us to implement strategic initiatives in support of economic development, quality of life and improved infrastructure here in Putnam."

"The town, which has began to inventory and audit its critical infrastructure needs, is thrilled to be the recipient of the grants," said Yorktown Town Supervisor Michael Grace. "The projects to which the grants will be applied are priority repairs necessary to keep our community safe and our local economy vibrant."

Putnam County Legislator Joseph Castellano said, "I know Senator Murphy has been working diligently to get more money to fix bridges in our area. Maintaining our infrastructure is a huge responsibility, but it is absolutely necessary to the continued growth of the community, and we appreciate Senator Murphy's help."

Yorktown will receive $3.290 million to repair two bridges; $2.470 million for a bridge that runs from Hill Boulevard over a tributary to Barger Brook, and $820,000 for a bridge from Veterans Road over Hallocks Mill Brook.

Putnam County will receive a total of $1.215 million. The County will also receive $750,000 for the bridge stretching from Fairfield Drive over the Putnam Lake outlet, and the town of Southeast will get 465,000 to repair a bridge that runs from Welfare Road over the east branch of the Croton River.

The criteria for selecting each bridge includes its importance to the community, traffic volume, detour considerations, the number and types of businesses it serves, its impact on commerce and its current structural condition.

The monies come from $21.8 million in funding earmarked to rehabilitate and replace 17 bridges and culverts across the Mid-Hudson Region. The funding, provided through Round One of the Governor Andre Cuomo's Bridge New York initiative, is part of a $21.1 billion multi-year capital plan to upgrade critical roads, bridges, and other vital transportation infrastructure across the state.
