Yorktown, NY - An overflow crowd of seniors joined Senator Terrence Murphy and Assemblyman Kevin Byrne for a free senior health fair at the Yorktown Community Cultural Center on May 25th. A wide range of agencies were on hand to highlight a broad range of services that included ride sharing, senior housing and long term care. Local health care experts from New-York Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital and AFC Urgent Care provided health screenings, including BMI and osteoporosis evaluations, blood pressure checks and blood sugar testing. Helping seniors prepare for the hazy days of summer that lie ahead, the health care specialists also answered questions on tick bites, summer health safety and ear infections.
"Our seniors are an essential part of our community. Our goal today was to provide them with a full range of services and options to improve their health," said Senator Murphy. "This resource fair will help connect seniors with organizations that can help them remain healthy and independent, not only through the hot days of summer that lie ahead, but for rest of the year as well."
"It is an honor to work with Senator Murphy to host this great event bringing resources directly to seniors in our community," Assemblyman Byrne said. "As the ranking member of the Assembly's Aging Committee, I work with legislators of all parties to find ways we can help provide better services for our seniors. Increasing access and raising awareness for the programs many of the agencies and vendors attending provide is one more way we get to do that."
As an added service, Senator Murphy and the Yorktown Police Department collaborated to provide a "Shed the Meds" program. The program encourages seniors and adults to bring their unwanted or expired medications to a safe location where they can be disposed of.
Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace said, "This annual fair has become a great event and the town of Yorktown is a proud partner and host. I look forward to bringing this event to the stand alone senior center at Downing Park in the near future."
