ALBANY, NY – State Senator Terrence Murphy has been named chairman of the powerful Investigations & Government Operations Committee in the New York State Senate. The assignment was announced today by Majority Leader John Flanagan, who also named Murphy to the Senate Banks Committee, Health Committee, Insurance Committee, Labor Committee, Local Government Committee and Mental Health Committee.
“As a member just beginning my second-term I am honored to have been named Chair of one of the most important Senate committees, ” Murphy said. “I intend to exercise strict oversight of State agencies to provide the highest level of accountability to the people of the great State of New York. Un-elected rulemakers and bureaucrats are running out of control and the recent pay-to-play scandals at various executive agencies show one house of government can’t police itself. As chairman, I will always put the people first and work to clean-up Albany and restore the public trust.”
The New York State Senate Standing Committee on Investigations and Government Operations has legislative oversight responsibilities on initiatives amending a variety of laws focusing on government operations. The Committee is charged with the responsibility of overseeing State actions and policies.
In addition, the Committee does have the authority to conduct investigations of State entities.
The Committee’s purview covers sections of the Alcohol Beverage Control law, Civil Rights law, Executive law, Indian law, Legislative law, Public Authorities law, Public Buildings law, Public Lands law, Public Officer law, State law, Tax law and Office of General Services land transfers in Unconsolidated law.
In his first term, Murphy served as chair of the State’s Administrative Regulations Review Commission, ARRC.
