Senator Murphy, AFC Urgent Care Give the Gift of Life
December 4, 2017
Yorktown, NY - More than 30 conscientious men and women proved it is better to give than to receive as they donated blood at a community blood drive held on November 30. The drive, co-hosted by Senator Murphy and American Family Care (AFC) OF Yorktown Heights was organized to address the New York Blood Center's critical need for blood donations during the holiday season.
"Medical emergencies and the need for blood never take a holiday," said Senator Murphy. "I am proud that our appeal for donations was answered so enthusiastically by the community. This is the best time of year for people to donate so that patients in need can continue to have more holidays with their families."
Dr. Rajesh Gupta, Medical Director for AFC said, "I was very pleased with the turnout for our recent blood drive. Being a donor is the best gift you can give to your friends and neighbors during the holiday season. It is the gift of life."
Nearly 2,000 blood transfusions are needed on a daily basis in New York and New Jersey alone. Because blood can be broken down into components, one pint of blood can save three lives. Blood donors meet the daily transfusion needs of cancer and surgery patients, accident and burn victims, newborns and AIDS and sickle cell patients among many others who depend on blood to survive. Because blood products have a limited shelf life, they must be constantly replenished.
Founded in 1964, The New York Blood Center serves 20 million people in the greater New York area through partnerships with more than 200 hospitals in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut.
Located at 3379 Crompond Road in Yorktown Heights, AFC Urgent Care is known for advanced patient care provided by expert physicians and staff, particularly in the areas of urgent care and occupational medicine.
