Senator Murphy to host first annual Hudson Valley Turkey Trot
November 6, 2017
Yorktown, NY - On your mark, get set, GO! If you are looking to make some room for your Thanksgiving dinner, Senator Terrence Murphy has come up with the perfect turkey day activity. On Thanksgiving morning, Senator Terrence Murphy will host his inaugural Hudson Valley Turkey Trot, a 5k race in Yorktown that will help benefit local needy families.
The race will begin Thursday, November 23 at 8:30 a.m. at 1520 Front Street. The course will continue to Route 118 and return to Front Street.
Senator Murphy said, "The typical Thanksgiving holiday consists of seconds, maybe thirds of turkey, then watching football until you fall asleep. The Turkey Trot is an early morning race that will still give you plenty of time to spend with your family. It is a chance to do something worthwhile by helping families who are less fortunate. I am confident the Turkey Trot will continue to attract racers to Yorktown for many years to come."
Senator Murphy's Hudson Valley Turkey Trot is co-sponsored by the Taconic Road Runners Club. Proceeds from the Turkey Trot will give needy families something to be thankful for, benefitting the St. Mary's Food Pantry in Mohegan Lake and the St. John's Food Pantry in Mahopac.
"We are happy to be part of an event to raise money for local food pantries," said John Hallinan, race coordinator for the Taconic Road Runners. "We like to give back to the community whenever we can. We want to help raise awareness. Even though we live in an affluent area, there are still families who go hungry. We want to help put a stop to this often overlooked problem."
The top three male and female finishers in each of eight age groups will receive awards. Registration for the race is limited, so runners interested in participating are urged to gobble up spots before they are gone. Registration of the November 23 will take place at the end of Front Street from 7:00 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
