Longtime College Point Nuisance Spa Castle Indicted on Tax Evasion
March 24, 2017
College Point, NY – Earlier today, Senator Avella confirmed what he has suspected for a long time- Spa Castle was up to no good. Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Acting Commissioner of Taxation and Finance Nonie Manion announced this afternoon that the four owners of Spa Castle in College Point were indicted on 11 felony charges each for failure to report millions of dollars in revenue from 2010-2013.
Since his days in the New York City Council, Senator Avella and his constituents have raised concerns over Spa Castle’s questionable business practices and unsafe conditions for patrons and employees alike.
As a City Councilmember, Senator Avella first raised serious questions about the site’s safety operations in 2008, after touring the facilities. During the visit, he noticed that fire exits were mislabeled, blocked with stored equipment, and in one case, padlocked.
Most notably, the Queens Senator demanded action in 2014 when a man was found dead in a spa castle hot tub. The spa was shut down for a period of time due to the dangerous conditions in one of their pools.
“It was no secret to anyone in College Point that the owners of Spa Castle have flouted the law since opening day. The amount of critical health violations that this establishment has racked up over the years is staggering and it is appalling that they were allowed to remain open for this long. After years of expressing my concerns about Spa Castle, I am not surprised that the owners are being indicted for tax fraud,” said Senator Avella.
