Queens, NY – This week, State Senator Tony Avella was informed by the Department of Transportation (DOT) that the intersection of Northern Boulevard and 150th Place will have a traffic signal installed by year’s end.
Senator Avella has made multiple requests for a traffic signal since 2014 when constituents first approached him about the intersection. DOT, however, had denied the request claiming traffic controls were not necessary, including a March 2017 response that said the intersection did not meet the necessary standards for a traffic light.
Now, however, DOT has reversed that decision and has informed Senator Avella that Flushing residents should expect the new traffic signal before the end of the year.
“I was very happy to hear that DOT reversed their earlier decisions about this location. As someone who has personally experienced the safety risks posed to pedestrians at this intersection, I can say without a doubt that a traffic signal was seriously needed at this location. This location is also home to Korea Village, a popular shopping center in the Korean-American community, which makes additional traffic controls all the more necessary. I am sure that when this signal is finally installed it will ease the worries of pedestrians and drivers alike,” said Senator Tony Avella.
