Senator Avella and Adrien Block I.S. 25 Students Celebrate Installation of Bike Rack
March 3, 2017
Queens, NY – This morning, Senator Tony Avella was joined by Adrien Block I.S. 25 Principal Beirne and students, including 8th grader Brianna Maher who requested Senator Avella’s help, to celebrate the installation of a new bike rack at the school.
Ms. Maher reached out to Senator Avella at the beginning of the school year to see if there was any way a bicycle rack could be installed at the school so students could have the opportunity to ride their bikes to school. On Ms. Maher’s behalf, Senator Avella contacted the Department of Transportation who then constructed and installed the bicycle rack. Prior to Ms. Maher’s request, students and teachers who rode bikes to school had to chain them to the fence outside of the school.
“I’m very happy to help provide this new bike rack to the students of Adrien Block I.S. 25 but the real credit goes to Brianna Maher. She had the courage to approach her local elected official to ask for something that would benefit the entire school community. Hopefully, other students see what she was able to accomplish and realize that they too can begin having the discussion at this young age about what they can do to improve their community,” said Senator Avella.
