Queens, NY – This week, the New York State Senate announced its committee leadership for the 2017-18 legislative session with Senator Tony Avella (D-Queens) once again being named Chairman of the Children and Families Committee. Senator Avella previously served in this role during the 2015-16 session.
Senator Avella’s Children and Families Committee will focus on raising the age for non-violent offenses for 16 and 17 year olds, increasing funding for after school programs, and increasing the amount of families receiving child care subsidies, as well as addressing a whole host of important issues that seek to promote the safety and well-being of New York’s children and families.
Senator Avella has also been appointed a member of the Senate Finance committee in addition to being a member of the Cities, Cultural Affairs, Education, Environmental Conservation, Elections, Housing, Judiciary, Libraries, and Transportation committees.
Furthermore, Senator Avella will serve as Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) Assistant Conference Leader for Policy and Administration.
“I have dedicated my life to protecting working and middle-class New Yorkers and I look forward to continuing that effort as the Chairman of the Children and Families Committee. I am happy to continue in this role and look forward to ensuring the safety and well-being of New York’s families in that capacity and in my new role as a member of the finance committee," said Senator Avella.
