Yonkers, NY - New York State Senator and Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-Yonkers) joined Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York and ShopRite Supermarkets for the launch of the fourth annual Feeding Our Neighbors campaign last Friday at ShopRite’s Greenway Plaza location in Yonkers.
The goal of this mid-winter campaign is to collect food and money for food pantries located in the Archdiocese of New York, which includes the counties of Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Putnam, Sullivan, and Westchester. All 27 of ShopRite’s Hudson Valley locations are coordinating collections from January 21 to February 3. During this time, ShopRite staff will ask customers to donate money or non-perishable food items to these pantries.
Other officials in attendance included Mayor Mike Spano, City Council President Mike Khader, Council Majority Leader Michael Sabatino, Council Member Corazon Pineda Isaac, Council Member Shanae Williams, Westchester County Legislator Christopher Johnson, and Father Donald Kaufman, LC, of St. Peter’s Parish in Yonkers. Participants also included various local leaders, members of the clergy, ShopRite employees, and customers.
“One in five people right here in Westchester County don’t know when they’ll get to eat their next meal,” said Senator Stewart-Cousins. “Collectively, we all have the skills and resources necessary to fight hunger. Catholic Charities and ShopRite have a great vision - to end hunger in own backyards - and I am proud to join them in this effort. There is always opportunity to give back to our community and our neighbors who may be struggling to put food on the table.”
During the first three years of the campaign, ShopRite raised almost $400,000 and 50,000 pounds of food. In 2017, donations accounted for the equivalent of 1.5 million meals. For information on how you can help, call your local food pantry or visit www.catholiccharitiesny.org.
